Factor V is also known as: proaccelerin, labile factor, Ac globulin.
- Biochemical aspects:
Factor V is an asymmetric, unstable, single-chain protein
with a molecular weight of approximately 330,000. Activation
of the procofactor to the cofactor involves thrombin.
- Pathological Basis:
- Mode of inheritance: autosomal recessive.
- A combined deficiency of factors V and VIII has been reported
( unknown etiology ).
- Acquired deficiency of factor V may be seen in patients on
Streptomycin, in severe liver disease, and in DIC.
- The degree of bleeding in factor V deficient patients appears
to be associated with the level of factor V activity found
within platelets rather than with the plasma level.
- Treatment:
- FFP: factor V level should be raised to 25% - 30% in patients
undergoing surgical procedures.
- Avoidance of aspirin-containing compounds.
Diagnostic Criteria:
- PT:abnormal
- APTT:abnormal
- Mixing_PT:corrected
- PT,adsorbed_plasma:corrected
- Factor_V_assay:abnormal
