User Responsibilities
Personal File Backup
BACK UP YOUR FILES! All users in DPALM are responsible
for maintaining their own backups of personal files. The main
choice of backup is currently 3.5" floppy disks and the P:
drive. As discussed earlier, the P: drive is a personal network
drive available to every user for file storage. All files on the
network are backed up nightly while individual user PC's are not.
SCAN FOR VIRUSES! All DPALM PC users are responsible
for virus checking their own files. Software is provided by DPALM
for virus scanning (Discussed
in section ten). It is recommended
that all floppy disks be scanned before they are used in
your office PC. Viruses can corrupt all data stored
on the PC's hard drive and floppies, and several DPALM users
have lost their entire hard drives.
DON'T SHARE PASSWORDS! Sharing passwords sacrifices
the integrity of the entire network. Anyone sharing passwords
will be subject to disciplinary action. Users should not ask for
other users passwords, even on a temporary basis. If access to
someone else's files is needed please contact the computer staff.
Office PC and Monitor
TURN OFF YOUR PC AND MONITOR NIGHTLY! PC's and monitors
get very hot and may catch on fire. If you need to access your
hard disk from home, you may keep your PC on, but we recommend that
you move the files that you want to use to your P: drive.
Unlicensed Software
DON'T INSTALL UNLICENSED SOFTWARE! Any software that
you decide to install on your PC should be licensed. The license
needs to be kept in your office for verification. This includes
the PCs in the User Room (2.233).
